Notes
- From June Lee Jan 2005
Mary and Manson had a terrible year in 1919 (approx.) All the children had measles and Mary was expecting a baby when the house took fire. Viola remembers she was writing on her slate and her mother was changing her shoes when they heard a noise and Viola was sent outside to look, and she saw fire rolling over the roof of the house. Viola ran to get her father from the barn, quite a distance away. He was up in the haymow and he jumped down and ran but the house was burned by the time he got there. Thankfully all had got out.Viola was sent to her Grandpa Switzers to inform them and they had heard her calling her father and thought it was a rooster crowing. Her mother Mary had never finished changing her shoes and ran out with one shoe on, everything had happened so fast. When the baby-Curtis was born shortly after this he also got measles and pneumonia and died at three weeks old. Also Manson lost his best horse that year.
Mary was living at 63 Bridge St. E., Bancroft prior to her death. She had been suffering from a prolonged illness.
