In his "Reminiscences" written for the Renfrew Mercury in 1915, John R. McDonald mentions Annie Ritchie as being the second telephone operator and Great Northwestern telegraph operator in Cobden.
Her Obituary in the Renfrew Mercury (Cobden News) on April 25, 1940 reads:
"The death of a life long resident in the passing of Mrs. W. D. Tuffy on Thursday, April 18th in her 66th year caused widespread sorrow in Cobden and vicinity. The late Mrs. Tuffy had been ill for a few weeks. Her maiden name was Annie Ritchie, daughter of late Mr. & Mrs. Hugh Ritchie. Born in Cobden and educated here and in Renfrew high school. She taught school in No. 1 Ross, later marrying Wm. Tuffy. She managed the Bell Telephone in Cobden for 26 years retiring in 1937. She was for a number of years telegraph operator for C.N.R. and C.P.R. A member of Sacred Heart church and took a keen interest in the C.W.L. of which she was first president. A member of Cobden W.I. and Horticultural society, in both of which she held offices, she took keen interest. Left to mourn are her husband, one daughter, Magdalen of Montreal, one sister, Alice (Mrs. J. McAllister) of Toronto, two brothers, James Ritchie of Vancouver and John of Nepawa. Funeral services were held on Saturday morning to Sacred Heart church to Osceola, after which interment was made there."
