Notes

  • Notes for KATHLEEN OLIVE ROBINSON:

Kathleen Olive Robinson --- known as Kay.

They lived in the Listowel School District, in the Rural Municipality of Dauphin, Manitoba. Their farm was situated approximately seven miles northeast of Dauphin, on SW 1/4: Sec - 33 Twp - 25 R - 18. The family lived in a little log house on the farm. Kay attened the Listowel School # 834, which was situated a mile north, and a half mile east of their home.

In 1930 the family moved to a new farm one mile north to SE 5-26-18w. The house was much bigger on this farm but would be eventually demolished and a nice frame house with a real basement being built in 1939.

She completed grade one to eight in Listowel School. She took grade nine by correspondance, attending school only to write Departmental tests and Exams. She completed her high school at the Dauphin Collegiat Institute, while staying with Gordon and May Robinson in Dauphin. Their house been to far from school for Kay to walk, Gordon and Lloyd arranged with the School Board to have the school van transport her to and from school. At that time the Vans were horse drawn and transported the children from the rural areas of southwest - west - northwest of Dauphin to schools in town. Kay would return home to the farm for the week-ends. After being home for a winter week-end, Aubrey and his team of huskie's drove her the eight miles to school on the Monday morning. They caused quite a sensation when they "mushed" up to the school entrance!. Kay graduated from high school in 1938 and then spent some time at home, pondering her future. In the fall of 1941 she enrolled in "Little's Business College in Dauphin.

Kay's childhood interests and hobbies were the usual kids stuff, but when she contacted polio at the age of eight, her activities were then restricted -- no more climbing trees, etc. She enjoyed playing cards, checkers, etc., reading and scribbling. She used to sing for the Archer's and Jognston that lived across the road from their first home.

Kay's childhood jobs were mostly helping her mother with household chores. She did a lot of ironing with irons that had to be heated on the stove. To her ironing boys shirts was a real pain. With her mothers help, she learned how to bake cookies and cakes, She never did master her mother's knack for baking bread and pies.

Kay was never a very big girl, never quite reaching five feet, but in the eyes of those who knew her, she was much taller. As an adult, Kay's interests and hobbies were that of handwork, knitting, crocheting, etc., and playing cards and reading.

Kay became a stenographer in McFadden's Law Office in Dauphin, from Spring to October 1942; with the Federal Government in the Personnel Department of the R.C.A.F. in Ottawa, Ontario, October 1942 to the Spring of 1944; with the Manitoba Government Welfare Department in Dauphin, first as a stenographer involved with adoptions and family services, then as a bookkeeper, and finally in financial and administrative duties, from July 10, 1944 to retirement in 1976.

Kay married Robert Louis Fulton on August 14, 1945 (VJ Day), in Dauphin, Manitoba. The minister told them their marriage date should be easy to remember, the day one war ended and a new one (theirs) began!. Bob and Kay did not have children but enjoyed family gatherings and family siblings.

Kay died of lung cancer on November 17, 2000, at home in Dauphin, Manitoba. Her ashes are interred in Riverside Cemetery, Dauphin, Manitoba.
