    Notes for JAMES ROBINSON:

    James Robinson and Margaret Good.

The earliest records I have found is in the 1851 Census of Ross twp., Renfrew Co., Ontario, Canada. (microfilm C-11751 of the National Archives, Ottwaw, Ontario). At that time James is listed as 39 years old and Margaret as 33 years. They were in a one story shanty with their oldest 8 children on what is described as light, sharp soil (probably down near the Ottawa River). They were members of the Church of Ireland (Church of England), and were both born in Ireland.

Tradition says James was born in Cavan Co., and Margaret's people are suposed to have settled in the area of Richmond, Ontario, near Ottawa. It is interesting to note that Hugh Ritchie 18, and his sister Sarah Ritchie are listed directly below the Robinsons' on the Census book which means they either were living with the Robinsons or next farm to them.

The next record is in the 1871 Census of Mount Eaglex twp., Hastings Co., Ontario, RR # 1, Maynooth (microfilm C-10022, National Archives). Why they left Renfrew Co., to move up among the rocks I do not know. I can only assume they were lured by the offer of free land.

Both Margaret and James died in 1887 and are buried in Mount Eagle twp., in Emmanuel Methodist Cemetery near Maple Leaf, at the end of Robinson Road.

Of their 13 children, we know a little of each of them except Marjorie.

William was killed in a logging accident while he was still a young man and unmarried.

John Good (our ancestor) stayed in Renfrew Co., and so did 4 of the girls.

Anne Jane married Hugh Ritchie who died when she was 38. Hugh and his sister are buried in Beachburg Cemetery next to the Robinson plot. I can find no record of where Anne Jane is buried.

Catherine (Aunt Kitty) married James Bennett, a native of Cornwell, England, and lived in Westmeath twp., Renfrew Co., On.

Frances (Aunt Fannie) married John Poff of Stafford, Renfrew Co., On.

Sophia (Aunt Seviva) married William Henry Dobson and lived near Micksburrg, Renfrew Co., On. Many of their descendants still live in the area.

David who married Mick from Micksburg, settled in one of the German settements near Pembroke, On. It would seem that he was a fighting man and quarreled with all his neighbors (often physically) and finally moved to somewhere in Western Canada.

James married Catherine Dobson, a sister of William Henry Dobson and settled in Maynooth near his parents. James is the ancestor of Claude Douglas Robinson.

    ***** From June Lee Jan 2005 *****

James and Margaret came from Ireland on a boat when Eliza was a baby therefore any children that were older than Eliza also were on that boat. They came to Cobden, Ontario. This was the late 1850s. They moved to Mounteagle Valley.
There were more children than recorded here, supposedly 7 daughters and several sons. The name 'Warriah", or something similar comes up, not known if married surname or first name. Also possible in the McDonald family.
